Students celebrate national arts week

Students might walk over a rainbow with the words “Because of Arts Education, I can express who I am” in white clouds on the sidewalk outside the Commons. White notes hung on pink and yellow yarn flutter in the trees in the Quad.
This week is National Arts in Education Week, and the whole campus is abuzz.
National Arts in Education Week, which begins the second Sunday in September, was passed by Congress in 2010 to recognize the impact of compelling arts education. Schools and communities all across the country band together to hail and recognize the importance of the arts in education.
“[Art] is one of our pillars and a very vibrant and important part of Kinkaid,” said Mr. Scott Lambert, director of Visual and Performing Arts. “The arts teach us to be creative, they teach us problem solve.”
He said it is essential to celebrate the power of art.
Sophomore Anna Duarte shares the same sentiment.
Duarte, who has dabbled in theatre and drawing since elementary school, said art gives her the space to be herself.
“It gives me a creative outlet to express myself and how I feel in unconventional social situations,” she said. “[National Arts Education Week] expands your mind in thinking about a bigger solution.”
