On Friday, Oct. 24, Kinkaid’s Student Diversity Leadership Board kicked off its first event of the school year, “Find Someone Who Bingo,” a lively game designed to spark connections and celebrate the theme of belonging and inclusion. Students gathered during lunchtime to mingle and play, while enjoying free Raising Cane’s with dessert.
The activity was to encourage students to step outside their usual circles and learn something new about their peers.
“It helped students feel more included at Kinkaid by using a wide array of niche bingo questions to challenge students to go outside of their friend group,” said freshman Gabriel Ngumbu.
Fellow freshman Jasmine Byrd agreed that the questions made the event more personal. “It helps people get to know others, and there’s a category for everyone,” she said.
As students hurried to fill their bingo cards, unexpected conversations bloomed.
Ngumbu shared that he learned new things even about close friends “like that some of them love listening to music that was released before they were even alive.”
Byrd discovered that many classmates had never broken any bones before, a fun fact that she said still surprises her.
Both students said the game opened doors for future conversations.
“It got people interested in other people’s hobbies and lives,” Byrd explained.
Ngumbu added that the activity fostered new connections.
“The competition encouraged people to branch out and talk to new people,” he said.
Ngumbu described what belonging means to him.
“Being in an environment where you don’t feel alienated or excluded and where you feel that you are treated fairly,” he said.
Their reflections echo the SDLB’s mission to make every student feel seen and supported. Events like these, the group said, remind Falcons that kindness and curiosity can bridge differences.
“It will definitely help me remember to make others feel included and to try to meet as many new people as possible,” Ngumbu said.
