As the bright lights shined on Segal Field, two football players, senior Max Skubisz, a varsity player, and sophomore Byson Huber, a junior varsity player, opened Senior Night by pouring their hearts out.
To start out the Senior Night football game against Rockport Fulton High School, Skubisz volunteered to sing the national anthem and asked Huber to sing with him.
At 5:45p.m, the crowd stood silently as their eyes honed in on Skubisz and Huber who walked to the middle of Segal Field.
“I was nervous, but just let those nerves fuel me and give me the power to sing my heart out,” Skubisz said.
Every year Mr. Charles Harrison, the choir director, prepares a list for students to volunteer to sing the national anthem. He creates the list after he is notified about the home game schedule. For instance, alumnus Will McMackin, former defensive end, performed with his sister, senior Lauren McMackin last year during Senior Night.
Skubisz sought the opportunity to show off his bass voice.
“I think stepping forward to take on this task shows leadership and courage, as the experience can be nerve racking and daunting,” Mr. Harrison said, adding that he was pleased with how their similar voices created harmony.
With a combined five years as bass choir students, Huber said the opportunity to sing before the game was a memory that he would not forget.
“The experience was fun and taught me a lot about self confidence,” Huber said.
After the performance, Huber rejoined fans in the stands and they congratulated him for his performance before getting ready to cheer on the Falcons.
Skubisz joined the sideline as he prepared to play offensive and defensive line and help lead the Falcons to a 56-28 victory.
