The Spirit of Kinkaid has set sail with a new theme for the 2025–26 school year: “Under the Sea.”
Chosen by SOK’s co-presidents, the theme will shape locker signs, banners and decorations during the school’s annual spirit week.
SOK Co-president Evan Paris said the board spent significant time considering possible themes before making its decision.
“We had a long process of picking the theme,” Paris said. “We spent a lot of time thinking about themes that could fit the SOK week sports walls, the locker signs and the banners. Then we had to come up with a second and third choice if our first didn’t get approved.”
The co-presidents also had backup themes in case their first choice wasn’t approved, ensuring a smooth decision-making process. They felt “Under the Sea” offered the most creative possibilities for decorations, banners and SOK week activities.
The theme also encourages students to be creative with both small and large projects, from individual locker decorations to school-wide banners and murals.
Paris said the group wanted a theme that was fun, lighthearted and easy for the entire student body to embrace.
“The other themes we looked at were great, but we just thought this Under the Sea theme had a lot of directions we could go in for SOK week and more,” she said.
Mrs. Erica Baker, director of student life and engagement, has served as the SOK sponsor and helps guide its traditions. She said the co-presidents handled the decision-making.
“The co-presidents picked three themes and decided on ‘Under the Sea’ because this theme has never been done, and it was exciting and fresh for the opening of the new building,” Mrs. Baker said.
For Mrs. Baker, SOK represents more than banners and spirit week competitions.
“I believe that school spirit is needed for the student body to feel like they belong and are a part of the community,” she said.
Paris agreed, adding that her goal as co-president is to create opportunities for connection and fun.
“I hope the school just has fun with it and loves all the art and decorations we put out throughout the year,” she said.
Looking ahead, Paris said she is especially excited for SOK Week itself. SOK Week, which takes place the week leading up to the annual St. John’s vs. Kinkaid football game, is one of the school’s most anticipated spirit events.
“It is always my favorite week of the year,” she said.
SOK is a student organization that encourages creativity, school spirit and friendly competition throughout the year. Each year, it brings students together, giving everyone a chance to contribute to the Upper School’s vibrant culture.
