The school’s recreational golf team, known as “Rec Golf,” offers students a laid-back way to unwind, socialize and sharpen their skills without the intensity of varsity competition.
Unlike most sports teams that demand hours of practice, games and travel, the recreational golf team focuses on enjoyment and balance.
“I like how it is not as much of a commitment as JV or varsity golf, but I still get an opportunity to practice something I really enjoy,” junior Maddie George said.
This was George’s first year participating in recreational golf, and she said she appreciated how she has been able to improve her skills without the pressure that often comes with competitive sports.
Students in the program meet several times a week to hit balls at Kinkaid for about an hour each day. For some, that hour has been a much-needed break from the busy pace of school and extracurriculars.
“Rec golf is one of my favorite times of the day,” senior Augie Pizack said. “I get to relax and hit a few balls and hang out with my friends, and then go home and do my homework.” Many students agreed with this, saying that the hour of practice feels more like a reset than a responsibility. Instead of feeling drained afterward, players often leave feeling recharged and more focused for the rest of their day.
The casual atmosphere has also helped create a strong sense of community among players. Whether they’re practicing, helping each other or laughing between swings, team members said the group has helped them form new friendships.
“I’ve made lots of new connections and strengthened my old ones,” sophomore Caden Curry said.
Players often challenge themselves to beat personal goals, and the relaxed environment allows them to focus on form and consistency without the pressure of competition.
For Kinkaid’s recreational golfers, it’s not about scores or tournaments. It’s about balance, and finding time in the school day to do something they truly love. As the program continues to grow, students say they hope it remains a space where they can build skills, friendships and confidence.
