Electric Lunch, Kinkaid’s student-run band, opened formal auditions for the first time, welcoming four new members to its ranks.
“We thought it would be fun to open up the opportunity and give people the chance to audition, whether they’re interested in music or they just want to give it their best shot,” junior Lana Tosic said.
Four band members graduated the previous year, leaving Electric Lunch with only two remaining members. Thus, the two were delighted to receive 16 eager applicants, four times the number of spots available.
“We had a pretty good turnout,” Tosic said.
Eventually, a new group was formed, with Sophomore Helen Ren as the pianist, Freshman Jack James as the bassist, and junior Stella Helander and freshman Bryce Goldstein as vocalists and guitarists.
In addition to the six core band members, senior Madelyn Pomroy and junior Evelyn Turrubiartes also assist the band as guest vocalists when needed, particularly in specific performances.
“It’s to give them an opportunity, if they want to come in,” said Hellander.
Electric Lunch was founded in 2019 and is distinct in being an entirely student-operated extracurricular activity. The band does not have a faculty sponsor and is not affiliated with any other Kinkaid organizations.
Tosic is currently managing the group. Her responsibilities include scheduling shows, leading rehearsals, and coordinating with Ms. Erica Baker the Upper School Director of Student Life and Engagement.
“Electric Lunch is such a cool opportunity to be a part of, as it is completely student-run and independent,” Helander said.
Tosic and sophomore Isaac Mayer were both invited to join Electric Lunch during their freshman years. Tosic is the drummer and Mayer plays electric guitar.
“Through Electric Lunch, I found my place and built lasting connections through the arts,” Tosic said.
Goldstein saw the band perform in middle school and knew it was something he wanted to be part of.
“I saw them performing, and I immediately looked up to them,” he said.
In addition to weekly band practices, each band member takes time after school to pursue their passion for music.
Helander and Goldstein both take vocal and guitar lessons.
The band’s first show will be in late November or early December. Kinkaid students and faculty should make sure to check out the band’s electrifying display of talent, passion, and community.
