On Thursday March 6th, track athletes from 14 different high schools from around the Houston area competed in the fourth annual Kinkaid Raevyn Rogers Invitational.
This was a special event honoring not only Raevyn Rogers, but the eleven seniors on the Kinkaid track team.
“It was a really special senior night because most of us have been running track together since Freshman year, so it was really awesome to be celebrated together,” said senior Emily Camp.
The track meet was overall an incredibly successful event, with first place wins in nine different events, including: the women’s 100 meter dash, the men’s 200m dash, the women’s 400 meter dash, the women’s 4×400 meter dash, the women’s 800 meter dash, the men and womens shot put, the men’s 110 meter hurdles, and the men’s triple jump.
Each athlete excels in their own events, but ultimately as a team to compete for the overall victory.
Through their drive and persistence, the Kinkaid boys and girls track teams took first place at this event.
One Standout athlete was Maddie Billip, excelling in both the women’s 400 and 800 meter dashes. She took first place in the 400 meter dash and second place in the 800 meter dash, behind fellow teammate Caroline Raynes, and first place in the women’s 4 by 400.
“The 4×4 was so fun because we had 12 girls running,” said Maddy Billip
Another athlete who excelled in their races was Darnell Joseph. He took first place in the 200 meter dash, third place in the 100 meter dash, second in the 4 by 400, and second in the 4 by 100.
“Winning was the greatest feeling because I had felt like I had something to prove and I was on the right track to prove it,” said Darnell Joseph.
The track team is overall a very supportive group of athletes, each wanting the other members to succeed.
“It was cool to see everyone cheering each other on in their races and made me even more grateful for these people and the program,” said Camp.
