The lights of Melcher Gymnasium illuminated a packed crowd, buzzing with energy. Players and coaches stood on the court, anticipation thick in the air, ready to take on their final home game of the season.
On Feb. 7, the boys’ varsity basketball team played against Awty International School for senior night. This game marked a farewell to their home court and a crucial moment for the seniors’ season.
The evening kicked off with the traditional pre-game ceremony. As each senior crossed the court, escorted by family members, and greeted with cheers, their name was called. They then received their end-of-season gifts, culminating years of hard work and dedication.
“It was a little sad realizing it was about to be our last game on this court, but we were fired up and ready,” senior Carson Cubbage said.
The bleachers were overflowing with students, parents, teachers, and even Kinkaid ESPN— a student-led reporting team—creating an electric atmosphere.
Once the game tipped off, both teams fought hard, matching each other shot for shot. Kinkaid initially struggled to pull ahead, but the unwavering crowd kept the energy high, fueling the players.
“The energy in the gym was the best it’s ever been. We show up and go all out to make sure the players have a good game, and I’m glad we were able to support them,” senior Gavin Johnson, a member of Kinkaid ESPN, said.
With each basket, their momentum surged, and the Falcons had found their rhythm. As the minutes ticked down, their determination to secure a victory for their final home game became undeniable.
When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard displayed a triumphant 62-41 victory over Awty. The gym erupted in celebration—students flooded the court, families gave a standing ovation, and teammates embraced one another.
“This was exactly how we wanted to end the home season,” senior Connor Cubbage said.
As the gym slowly emptied, the seniors lingered, soaking in the final moments of their high school careers on their home court.
While the emotions were mixed—bittersweet yet triumphant—the Falcons remain focused on their next challenge: finishing strong at the SPC championship this weekend.
“We’re locked in for SPC. This win was exciting but we’re ready to take on St. Mark’s School this weekend,” senior Harris Saunders said.
