Boys basketball wins against Dekaney to start season
December 5, 2022
The boys varsity basketball team had its first home game of the year against Dekaney High School on Nov. 11. The Falcons came into the game as the underdogs after a blowout scrimmage loss in the preseason, when the team scored only 7 points.
Dekaney showed up to Kinkaid expecting a similar result and the north Houston school was greeted by a full house of Falcons. The student section showed out, dressed in the game’s beach theme.
The game got off to a slow start with Dekaney going up 9-0, however, the offense was able to come back and finish the quarter only down by 1 point.
“The student section brings us energy on defense, which fuels our offense,” said senior guard Pete Nicolaou. “We can really tell that it makes a difference when the student section is there. The game was electric to say the least.”
After a slow start, sophomore Jack Paris, a wing, made a plethora of three-point shots to give the Falcons the momentum in the game.
“The hot start to the second quarter was definitely the turning point,” said senior point guard and captain Jared Laskin. “We came out firing and hit our threes. That helped us win the quarter 19-9.”
Sophomore point guard Eian Lowe and Paris lead the team in points with 13 and 21 points respectively.
“Jack Paris’ three late in the third quarter to put us up by 11 was definitely a turning point because we were playing such good defense,” Nicolaou said.
While the offense slowed in the second half, the defense held off Dekaney. After making many free throws to seal the game, the Falcons upset the Dekaney Wildcats 6a team.
After the Falcons took the lead in the early second quarter, they did not let Dekaney regain the lead for the rest of the game.
When the final buzzer sounded, the crowd erupted and the boys were greeted by an ecstatic student section on the court.
With a final score of 49-44, the game gave the Falcons their first home victory of the regular season.
