Bocce balls clattered and cheers rang out early Saturday morning as Special Olympics athletes took over Kinkaid’s Segal Field, turning it into a lively arena of competition, teamwork and celebration.
From sunrise to late morning, athletes and student volunteers filled the space with energy, excitement, and encouragement.
The event ran from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., drawing Special Olympics athletes from across the Houston area.
“I was not looking forward to the early wakeup for this community service, but after the event, I was very grateful I went because it was such a positive experience,” said senior Whitney Sturm.
Kinkaid student volunteers arrived before 7 a.m. to organize and set up dozens of bocce courts stretching across the field and along the track lanes.
Before the games began, participants gathered for an opening ceremony on the 50-yard line.
The ceremony included a performance of the national anthem, sung by a Special Olympics athlete who brought the crowd to a standing ovation.
Afterward, teams went to their assigned stations along the track to meet up and prepare for their matches. Flags waved and music played over the loudspeakers as the athletes got ready. The energy was infectious, and each round of applause set the tone for the morning ahead.
In addition to the bocce matches, the event featured a hospitality tent where families and supporters could relax, share snacks and connect with one another.
“I really enjoyed this opportunity to interact and help out with special needs athletes,” said senior Augie Pizack. “It was rewarding to see their excitement and energy.”
Senior Colin Josephson said he was pleased with his volunteering experience.
“I felt so good after encouraging the athletes, and it was an awesome way to help out the community,” Josephson said.
By the time the last scores were tallied and the bocce balls were packed away, smiles filled the field.
What began as a chilly, early morning turned into a warm celebration of inclusion, teamwork and community.
